When Do You Need IIF?
QuickBooks Desktop can import bank transactions two ways: Web Connect (QBO files) or IIF import. Most of the time Web Connect is easier. But IIF is useful when:
- Web Connect gives errors or doesn’t recognize your file
- You’re using an older QuickBooks version (2019 or earlier)
- You need more control over how transactions are categorized
- You’re importing into a specific account that Web Connect doesn’t support
After Import: What to Check
Once you import the IIF file (File → Import → IIF Files), review these things:
- Account names — QuickBooks creates new accounts if names don’t match. Merge duplicates if needed.
- Transaction dates — make sure they’re in the right period
- Duplicates — if you imported the same file twice, delete the duplicates

What QuickBooks versions support IIF?
All QuickBooks Desktop versions — Pro, Premier, Enterprise. Works from old versions through 2024. QuickBooks Online does NOT support IIF.
My IIF won’t import — what’s wrong?
Common issues: file is open in another program, account names have special characters, or date format doesn’t match your QuickBooks settings. Try opening the IIF in Notepad to check for obvious problems.
Can I edit the IIF before importing?
Yes. IIF is just a tab-separated text file. Open in Excel or any text editor. You can change account names, amounts, or delete transactions you don’t need.
